Chapter Sixteen

Archer’s mention of the benefit had sent me searching in my emails, and I’d found the invite to the Gigantes’ fund raiser. I hadn’t formally responded, but I doubted they’d turn me away. I’d received the invite before meeting Archer and had planned to donate but not attend. Tricia, of course, had tried to persuade me to come with her and Victor, but I’d sidestepped her hounding me. Once Archer told me he’d be attending, it was stupid to stay home and wait for him when he and my family would be together. That could prove disastrous, and sure enough, when I walked in, I saw him and Tricia in an intense conversation.

And then he threw out that question, which I answered off the cuff. “I’ll see.”

Tricia’s jaw dropped. “Are you serious?”

Suddenly, I was tired of all the pushing and questions. Why the fuck should I care what anyone thought? Why was I so worried about conventions and rule makers? I was a grown man, capable of living my life and making my own decisions. The thought of danger appealed, and I decided to hell with it.

“Yeah. I am. As a matter of fact…” I left her side to grab Archer’s hand and pull him close.

“Mads?” Archer stood waiting, curious but with a half smile.

“Shut up and kiss me.”

I settled my lips over his half-open mouth, deciding if everyone in the goddamn world was so interested in my sex life, let them get a good look. Our tongues met, and he sucked mine for a too-brief moment before I let him go. Archer’s eyes glittered, his normally cool demeanor clearly rattled.

“What was that for?”

“You’re hot in a tux.”

He grinned, and I wanted to drag him off and kiss him again. “Incoming,” he murmured.

Tricia pulled on my arm. “I’m sorry, Mads. I know I’ve been in your business and you hate that. I didn’t mean to force you into an uncomfortable situation where you felt like you had to do that just to prove a point. I promise I’ll back off. I just love you, and I want you to be happy.” She pressed a kiss to my cheek. “I’d better go find Victor now before he eats his weight in cheese. Nice to meet you, Archer.” And she was off.

We stood looking at each other, and I shook my head. “I think I’ve been given a reprieve. Jesus, if I knew all it would take was kissing some random man at an event, I could’ve done that a long time ago and saved myself a million and a half dollars.”

Archer paled, and his lips thinned. “I’m happy to leave you alone. But you said the money was mine no matter what.”

Shit.

“No. I didn’t…fuck. That’s not what I meant. I was joking.” Lowering my voice, I leaned against a column by Archer to speak more privately. “Do you think after these weeks together I want to give you up?”

“I don’t know what to think.”

Heat rushed to my face. “You understand my situation…and I feel I can trust you.
